Seven accused members of German far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
