The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.
The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Backup Options
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
